The right therapist matters.

Savannah Henderson

LICENSED PROFESSIONAL CLINICAL COUNSELOR, M.S.

When I first became a therapist, I thought I wanted to work in early childhood mental health. I was interested in play therapy and helping children process emotions and build healthy relationships with their caregivers. My educational background in education, child development, and clinical counseling helped me gain an understanding of attachment theory and how attachment with our early caregivers impacts us throughout our lifespan. I became passionate about helping others understand how our early models of emotional regulation and conflict management stem from our parents and caregivers, and how we carry intergenerational patterns, perspectives, and trauma into the present. I made a pivot into working with adults, both individually and couples.

My attachment lens is still very present in my work. I utilize emotion-focused therapy, a form of talk therapy that draws from attachment theory and helps you understand and recognize negative emotional processing and reactions that cause distress in your life and your relationships. Emotion-focused therapy centers the experiences of you, the client, and is designed to help you build safe, secure connection with others. If this sounds like something you would benefit from, I may be the right therapist for you.

I obtained my graduate degree from San Diego State University (Go Aztecs!) in Clinical Counseling in 2021 and began my therapy career as an intern in a community-based clinic in South San Diego, providing therapy to adult survivors of intimate partner violence and facilitating group therapy for children impacted by family separation. I have 3+ years of experience working in private practice settings with individual adults and couples, children, and teenagers. I have also worked in intensive outpatient program settings, facilitating group therapy for adults with mental health diagnoses. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked in the field of higher education for over 5 years, and helping students overcome academic and personal challenges inspired my decision to become a therapist.

Outside of my career, I enjoy life in San Diego with my wife and our pets. I love to support San Diego sports teams, support local coffee shops, peruse farmers markets and craft pop-ups, binge watch tv, read, cook, and unwind with cozy gaming.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Rylie

    THERAPY ASSISTANT

Rylie has excellent listening and cuddling skills. Rylie is often located nearby during telehealth sessions, providing support to Savannah by being adorable. Occasionally she will interrupt with barking—hey, nobody is perfect!

  • Benny

    THERAPY ASSISTANT

Benny is also an excellent listener, although he is known to fall asleep during sessions (we’re working on it). You will find Benny to be a bit more present then Rylie, often deciding that he would like to make an appearance during sessions by walking directly across the desk in front of the camera.
